Vienna Woods

A couple with a toddler and baby wanted a quiet, no-kid zone they could retreat to when not tending to the children. Kelly Marino Designs re-imagined the primary bedroom and unused sitting room to create an inviting place to sleep and relax. A mix of masculine and feminine elements in a cream-and-black motif make for a soothing, peaceful setting. Black walls and custom Roman shades with a checkered pattern appeal to the masculine senses, while floral custom drapery and a large botanical print on the wall have a more feminine aesthetic. New task lighting allows for reading, and a large television (not shown) provides a place for movie watching. On the bedroom side, we replaced the bed with a new one, incorporating creamy upholstery and a dark, rich wood finish, while the original dresser received new hardware to soften the look.  

McLean VA Kitchen Renovation

An exterior wall was bumped out and a bay window added to expand a somewhat small kitchen into a highly functional, handsome place to prep, cook and serve. Warm woods, creams and natural quartzite countertops create a serene, clean-looking space for family and friends to gather. The red oak hardwood flooring matches the existing flooring throughout the home, and a few glass-front uppers display family heirlooms to add warmth and homey comfort.

McLean Kitchen

A young family with two school-age children wanted a larger kitchen and an oversized island where everyone could gather for meals and entertaining. To enlarge the space, Kelly Marino Designs removed two unused, existing features of the home: the butler's pantry and the shower in a bathroom located on the other side of a kitchen wall. The space where the shower was became a walk-in pantry. Another request from an owner was for a place to showcase her beloved china that she had inherited. The only element that remained from the original kitchen were the two traditional ceiling light fixtures. Semi-custom cabinetry in a rich, dark blue, mixed with some white lower cabinets and lightly-veined quartz countertop give this kitchen a fresh take on a mostly traditional design. Textured tile in a herringbone configuration elevates the space. Sliding glass doors that lead to the deck were replaced with an accordion glass door for an unobstructed, seamless indoor/outdoor experience.

Falls Church

"Let's make it ours," was the over-arching theme of this generously-sized home in Northern VA. Light, color and flow dominated the design choices. A gender-neutral nursery and earthy toddler bedroom included custom drapery and area rugs. An accent wall with a whimsical wallpaper print in the nursery helped transform the space. In the Jack and Jill bathroom, unique cement floor tile set the tone for a fun and fresh children's space. Elsewhere in the home, a powder room received a complete makeover using golden hues with pops of black; and a small, nondescript mudroom received paneling and custom built-ins to create a functional, handsome space before entering the home.

Tween Boy's Room

The parents of a sports-loving tween wanted to provide function and order to an oddly-shaped, narrow bedroom. Kelly Marino Designs reconfigured the room by designing custom built-ins that provide storage and visual appeal. A durable leather chair and floor lamp offer a comfortable reading nook. Overall, the design is one that will meet the needs of the tween as he grows and his needs change.

Spring Valley West

This stately home in the Spring Valley neighborhood of Washington DC is home to a family of four who transformed this house into a comfortable and livable home that reflects their eclectic style and the pieces they've collected over the years from worldwide travels. A mix of contemporary-leaning, traditional and mid-century modern furnishings and lighting are expertly combined throughout the home for day-to-day living and fun entertaining.

Haycock Home

This dreamy primary bathroom suite was once dark and dated. Marble accents, white ceramic tile and gold accents helped lighten the space and make it welcoming. The best part? No plumbing was added or moved; instead, the space was re-imagined to inject new life into the space. A large free-standing tub becomes the highlight of the bathroom, along with a large, his and her shower.

Capitol Hill Townhouse

Original townhouses are hard to come by in this tree-lined DC neighborhood. This home was meticulously renovated and designed, staying true to many original features while updating it for today's needs and the family's lifestyle. Refinished hardwood floors, a new staircase and enlarged kitchen are a few of the features that dominated the renovation. Wallpaper in the vestibule sets the tone as you enter the home and small surprises are at every turn: bold wallpaper in the powder room, floor-to-ceiling bookshelves in the living room and new lighting in every space are a few such details.

Bethesda Kitchen & Wet Bars

A family of five (and two dogs) live in this Bethesda MD home that desperately needed updates to better serve their lifestyle. The bulk of the work was in the kitchen, an existing wet bar off the dining room and a new wet bar in the basement. For the kitchen, it was determined that a transformation could ensue without ripping everything out. Instead, only the island was replaced, with the cabinets along the perimeter of the room getting refinished. A new stone backsplash is the star of the space, and new lighting and hardware helps complete the look. For the wet bar, the idea was to brighten it up while retaining the storage. Multi-colored, iridescent tile was used for the backsplash, adding some much-needed color. And in the basement, existing plumbing from a bathroom behind the wall was utilized for a brand new wet bar. While it was initially  intended for the three tweens/teens, in the end it was determined that the basement would be turned into an inviting space for all to enjoy. The result is a neutral-colored, handsome wet bar in warm wood, marble tile and brushed nickel.

Bethesda Dining and Living Room

A family of five who likes to entertain requested a refresh for their dining and living rooms. A light-colored, textured wallpaper in the living room and lighter/brighter paint color in the dining room helped with the overall transformation. Removing the previous dark, oversized furniture in both rooms also helped turn the outdated spaces into light, bright, welcoming rooms for friends and family to spread out and enjoy. Small but mighty details, such as a funky light fixture in the dining room and custom pinch-pleat drapery in the living room add interest to the spaces.

Rosslyn Condo

A fun, busy couple who downsized to a condo in a bustling neighborhood ditched everything from their previous home to start fresh. From the moment you step out of the elevator into the entry, you are welcomed by warm wood tones and clean lines. Ceramic tile that mimics cement serves as an accent wall in the entry. Custom built-ins and unique finishes throughout the condo are at every turn, such as an antique-looking, geometric-patterned mirror backsplash at the dry bar and a patchwork woven wallpaper in the primary bedroom. Funky pieces and a custom built-in workspace turn a spare room into a combined guest room and office. 

Chevy Chase Bathrooms

After a major kitchen renovation, these home owners felt that the outdated bathrooms, too, could benefit from a makeover. This project included the main-level powder room, and an upstairs Jack-and-Jill bathroom. The goal for the powder room was to achieve serene elegance without it feeling too formal, and functionality for the two teenage girls who share the Jack-and-Jill. For the powder room, details such as vinyl wallpaper that mimics woven, natural paper; and a Carrara mosaic marble floor tile took the lead for the powder room. The Jack-and-Jill was designed using light colors and clean lines. A slightly textured white and light gray tile was chosen for the shower wall and provided the the jumping off point for the overall design, with the new vanity and hardware following. The result for both brings a lightness and brightness that feels fresh and clean.

Small McLean Bathroom

From 1960's to today...this small bathroom was outdated and dull.  Because the space is small, we lightened it up with a white and light gray palate. Just a touch of carrara marble along the wainscotting adds visual interest, as does small pops of coral in the wall art and custom shower curtain.

Treeline Powder Room

This bathroom, original to the home, was tired and outdated, and included a shower that never got used. We removed the shower altogether and created a fresh, lightened-up powder room. The ceramic floor tile was replaced with Carrara marble and the walls were enhanced with a dainty botanical wallpaper. New lighting, vanity, and aged brass finishes completed the look.
